Ubuntu: Linux
I’ve had quite a play around on the newest version of this OS, begun to come to terms with basic commands in the Terminal, i was a little upset that my ATI Graphics Card drivers wouldn’t let me run Compiz Fusion, which was the main feature i wanted to test under the Operating System.
I spent a number of hours trawling through tutorials all leading me toward replacing default drivers with ATI Catalyst 7.11 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver, it seemed even when i installed this in the “restricted driver list” the new driver was not listed but the VMware default driver was listed, after changing some more configuration files and continually trying other tutorials, i decided to call it a night. I want to give this some more focus in the new year, concentrating on my up and coming assignment deadlines and exams at the start of January, would probably be the best plan of action.
I would like to make a small comment about the list of help documents provided for Ubuntu, the official site is incredibly useful.
See; https://help.ubuntu.com/
One small note on VMware Workstation, when installing Ubuntu I changed the resolution before installing, when it was running from the installation CD (so could view everything in my windowed mode). Once I had installed and restarted to log on for the first time, I could not see the login window and had to guess what it was asking for! There seemed no way around it, the full screen window I could see was literally 800×600 (blacked out in the bottom and right) even though it was set to 1280 x 1024, I did manage to guess eventually you needed to tab to the text box enter username, press return and then enter your new password (note:no confirm password)!
Check out Compiz Fusion in action! jealous :S
Im sure ill get there, I didnt get this far by giving up!
